Hard Tonneau Covers
Hard tonneau covers are typically the most secure truck bed cover and offer outstanding looks for your truck. These hard covers are mainly offered in a black textured finish which is meant to imitate the black trim found on most pick up truck beds today.
These covers do not roll-up but some do fold like a tri-fold, there are some that also may retract, you will also find them hinged near the front of the pickup bed, these open and close somewhat similar to a hood or truck on a car. Hard covers are usually made from either aluminum or TPO and /or ABS plastics.
Most hard tonneau covers need to be removed if you need to haul tall items in your truck bed, the removal is usually quite simple, but may require two people so not to damage the cover. As mentioned above you can also find a hard tri fold that is easier when hauling items and only requires one person to flip it back. On hinged tonno covers, the rear of the cover is released from pneumatic or gas props and the cover can be released from the front hinges. The hinged tonneaus really should be removed by two people since they are bulky, and awkward – not due to weight.
Hard covers offer great weather protection and most hard cover manufacturers claim they are “weather tight” . It is hard for any tonneau cover to claim their tonneau cover is “waterproof”. However when installed correctly, hard covers can keep your truck bed dry from the harsh elements.
